July 15, 2017 with Jessie

Hi, everyone!
We are Formosan bears.  We are twins.   Because our best friend, Jessie, is a big fan of Harry Potter, she decided to name us Fred and George.   .

Between us is our friend, Adam Bear.   He is from Canada.   Just look at him.  You know he is a brown bear.   We have never seen a brown bear so small.   Well, it’s just a baby bear.

Just for your information:  We, Formosan black bears were voted the most representative wildlife of Taiwan.  Actually, we are the mascot for the Universiade 2017 in Taipei.  You can see us everywhere in Taipei during the sports events.   We are also the largest land animals and the only native bears in Taiwan.  Because of the loss of our habitat, there are fewer of us living.  We are listed as “endangered.”  On our chest, we have a distinctive yellowish or white mark shaped like a “V.”
We primarily eat leaves, buds, fruits, roots, although we also eat insects, small animals, and carrion.  We eat a lot of acorns.  We can easily outrun humans, reaching speeds of 30–40 km per hour. We are skilled at swimming and climbing, as well.  Because we are endangered and we are so afraid of humans that we normally run away from  humans, it’s not easy for you to see us in the wild.

Our stories all began when Jessie got permission to teach in Chinese Taipei School Penang.
